DAY 1: TIRANA – DURRES
We meet at the airport; from there we drive directly to Durres on the coast. After check-in at the hotel, we relax on the beach drinking coffee – a typical Albanian activity – and eating ice cream. In the evening we enjoy a typical Albanian-Mediterranean meal.
DAY 2: DURRES – ADVICE
After a leisurely breakfast, we drive about 1.5 hours to Berat, the town with the 1001 windows, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2005.
Arriving in Berat, we will first stroll through the old town quarters of Gorica and Mangalem, marvel at the unique architecture, doors, and archways. We will climb up to the castle complex and visit the Ethnographic Museum and Onufri Museum. The castle, which is still inhabited today, is a big adventure playground with its winding alleys. At the same time, it is a testimony to Berat’s centuries-old architecture. In the castle complex, there are souvenir shops and craftsmen selling their own products. Several restaurants and cafés invite you to enjoy a pleasant stay.
DAY 3: BERAT
After a day of culture in the beautiful town of Berat, some action is urgently needed. For the more adventurous guests, a rafting tour in Osumi Canyon is a good option. For this, we will drive upriver through the Osumi Valley and then spend about 3 hours on and along the river. If you don’t feel like this adventure, spend a relaxing day in Berat or take the car to the surrounding mountains.
DAY 4: BERAT – GJIROKASTRA
We leave Berat in the direction of Fier and further on to Gjirokaster. This town is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city of 1000 stones and steps is famous for its stately houses from the Ottoman period, some of which have been lavishly restored. High above the valley is one of the largest fortifications in Albania from the 13th century. In addition to an exhibition of cannons and military equipment, the complex houses an American jet that crashed over Albania during an alleged spy flight. The most famous offspring of the city are as contradictory as one can imagine. One is the dictator Enver Hoxha, and the other is Ismail Kadare, Albania’s most famous writer. As an activity in the city, a visit to the many stonemasons and seamstresses’ workshops is a good idea, as they will willingly let you look over their shoulders.
DAYS 5 – 11: GJIROKASTRA – HIMARA
On our way to our holiday home in Himara, we stop at the “Blue Eye” – a water spring with an incredible abundance of crystal-clear water. Then the journey takes us to Butrint, one of the most important archaeological sites in Albania, testimony to 3,000 years of history. The small peninsula is ideal for a walk of about 2 hours. In the middle of the nature reserve of the same name, you will find turtles, colorful dragonflies, butterflies and ancient walls with strange figures. For the little guests, there is a “treasure hunt” which ends with a spectacular find.
Impressed by the many nature and culture, we make our way to Himara, where we spend the next four days by the sea and enjoy the beach life. For in-between, there are numerous possibilities for activities such as donkey trekking, paragliding, boat trips and much more.
DAY 12: HIMARE – DURRES
After four relaxing* days by the sea, we return to the capital Tirana. On the way, we will stop at particularly impressive places, which can be visited on the right and left of the road. These include the Llogara Pass with a view of the sea and the opposite island of Corfu from a height of 1,000 meters. The lagoon of Narta (protected area), the Roman city of Apollonia or the Orthodox monastery of Ardenica are ideal places to stop.
* The kind of relaxation depends very much on the time of the journey. In the high season of July and August, the beaches are very busy and parties are the order of the day. In the low season, when temperatures are still high in summer, the beaches are almost deserted.
DAY 13: DURRES – TIRANA – DURRES
Tirana should not be missing on the program of a trip to Albania. The hustle and bustle, the street cafés and the chaotic traffic should not be missed if you want to get an impression of today’s young Albanian society. Of course, we also have exciting places on our program for the young guests, such as a bunker from the Cold War or a cable car ride up the local mountain Dajti.
DAY 14: DURRES – AIRPORT
We will accompany you to the airport and say goodbye with the wish that we can welcome you soon back in Albania to experience many more adventures.
* The last two nights can be spent either in Durres or Tirana.
